Q7:Q6/Reading comprehension/Sarah Smallwood describes a national skills shortage and the work of the Bindeman Foundation.‘Our order book is full, but I am short of ten people to do fairly simple but responsible and well-paid jobs. We train on the job, of course, but new people need basic skills which they just don’t seem to have.’The situation Adrian Wilson is describing here is a typical one. He is the Managing Director of a specialised manufacturing company, but he tells us that his problem can be multiplied dozens of times over in the industrial park where his business is located. In fact, across the nation there is a skills gap which must be filled if the country is to have a future in manufacturing and IT, or keep its status as a world centre of excellence in the financial and banking sectors. Even service industries such as tourism are beginning to have trouble recruiting staff with the necessary skills. However, it is in his own sector that Adrian Wilson says there is the most urgent and immediate need for good, competent staff, with solid skills and the ability to learn and improve on the job.Mike Head, Director of Operations at an international transport company, has in the past found many job candidates unable to do simple mathematics or communicate effectively. Above that level, far too few have acquired any technical skills involving the use of machinery, IT software, or, as he most recently found out, even the most basic sales and marketing knowledge. A series of posts requiring a general understanding in this area have been advertised now for several weeks and are still unfilled.A further point Adrian Wilson makes is that not only does he have problems finding suitable new people to work for him, he even has great difficulty filling his training courses, especially the more advanced ones for young people leaving university rather than school. He says it is not a question of general systems failure or lack of availability of suitable trainers or of funding. With the present skills shortage, companies are very keen to invest in more training for their employees. The problem is that, after several years of studying, too many students coming out of college or university with good degrees are content to stop learning the moment they finally walk away from the classroom. It would clearly be wrong to say they show lack of intelligence; they simply lack the ambition to go any further. They think they know enough already. Here at the Bindeman Foundation, over a period of a year, trainees are offered confidential sessions away from their immediate colleagues and the stresses of their personal lives, friends and family. The essential requirement is that they be put in a position where they can learn to think for themselves. Once they realise that they themselves are in charge of their own learning, they can then be encouraged to think of ways of identifying success, dealing with failure, and achieving their personal goals.Training is free to both school-leavers and graduates so long as they have been in full-time state education and are now actively looking for a career in business. Until two years ago, trainers were trained and paid and administration costs covered from gifts made by generous individuals and companies. Now, however, the Bindeman Foundation has contracts with companies which work in close co-operation with it because they will benefit from being associated with those people involved in running the training courses.

Q8:Adrian Wilson complains that he cannot fill vacant positions in his company because many people...

ask for high salaries even for very simple jobs.
are unwilling to do boring and unskilled jobs.
lack the necessary paper qualifications for the work.
are unable to perform ordinary but essential tasks.

Q9:To fill its latest vacancies, Mike Head's company was looking for people who...

had good communication skills.
knew the principles of sales and marketing.
could use a range of IT software.
were experienced in operating machinery.

Q10:According to Adrian Wilson, why is it becoming more difficult to run advanced training courses?

Many graduates are reluctant to do further training.
Degrees are often insufficient preparation for advanced training.
There are too many students and not enough trainers.
Too many companies expect employees to fund their own training.

Q11:The Bindeman Foundation's priority is to help trainees learn to...

develop leadership strategies.
distinguish between success and failure.
work effectively with other people.
take responsibility for their own decisions.

Q12:How does the Bindeman Foundation currently finance its courses?

It charges clients a small fee.
It develops partnerships with businesses.
It is sponsored by interested individuals.
It is given a grant by the state.
